A law firm sometimes referred to as a corporate law firm, is an entity formed by at least one lawyer to engage in the profession of law. The main service provided by a law firm is, of course, to advise potential clients about their rights and obligations under the law, including but not limited to, personal injury protection, employment law, and real estate law. There are some other specialized fields of specialization within the realm of law, including tax law, corporate law, family law, and others. A typical lawyer can practice in any or all of these specializations. But a majority of the lawyers that practice in these various specialties tends to concentrate on a specific area of the law.
There are law firms that provide associates with various kinds of educational backgrounds, credentials, experience, and abilities to assist attorneys in providing adequate legal representation to their clients. The typical associates to law firms are junior attorneys who usually take on the cases of young, inexperienced, and low-experienced individuals. These junior attorneys typically have not been on the job for very long and do not have a track record of representing very complex cases. Their primary function is to provide competent legal representation to individuals.
Many law firms also hire attorneys to be partners. This is not a typical partner/client relationship, as partners are typically those attorneys with the most experienced in the particular practice areas that the law firm represents. The typical partners/clients relationship in a law firm would be with an experienced attorney who has a long-standing partnership with another attorney. These two attorneys typically do not practice in different areas of the law. However, if they do have different areas of expertise, each partner would then be responsible for the cases of all of their partners. These partners are typically paid handsomely for their work.
At other major law firms, there is more of a relationship between associates and the partners in the law firms. A partner at a major firm typically works more like a secretary than an attorney. He or she does clerical work, answering phones, sending emails, and scheduling appointments. A partner’s main responsibility is to manage the day-to-day operations of the law firm’s business. They report directly to the partners and have no authority over cases, although they can attend court proceedings if called upon.
Art lawyers operate in a completely different level of the legal system. These lawyers generally concentrate on creating visual works – paintings, sculptures, or photographic art. An art law lawyer will often deal with the ownership and copyright of artworks. In addition to copyrighting your own work, you may be entitled to additional compensation for borrowing someone else’s work – such as from a museum. An art lawyer will usually study your case thoroughly before offering any advice.
Attorneys and partners at top law firms generally receive the highest salaries. This is not always the case, however. Many associates begin their careers in lower-paid law firms and then pursue higher-paying positions. While you should expect to start out at the bottom of the salary range, overtime and additional seniority positions may lead to a raise eventually. To anticipate salary trends for your area of practice, contact several top law firms and ask about their starting salaries and their overall law firm’s outlook for your position.

The number of years a partner or attorney has been with a firm also affects salaries. If you have worked with a firm for several years, your earnings will increase quite a bit. If you are just starting out, on the other hand, you will not likely see very high returns. The length of time you have worked with a partner or attorney at law firms also has a direct correlation to the cost of your partner’s and attorney fees.
As you can see, the starting pay for attorneys and partners at top law firms can vary quite a bit depending on where you work and the experience you bring to the table. Law firm associates with years of experience earn the most money. There are also different ways to supplement a law firm salary, such as hourly rates and commission payments.
